Curry graduates from Harding University

Jordan Curry of Ashville is one of more than 750 graduates who received a diploma at Harding University's commencement exercises May 7. Curry received a Bachelor of Business degree in finance.


Students earn honors at Youngstown State

Laine Bulmer and Corie Hoselton, both of Circleville, have been named to the spring 2016 dean's list at Youngstown State University.

Bulmer also earned a spot on the president's list for the Spring 2016 semester. The President's List includes YSU students earning 4.0 grade-point averages during the semester.

Bulmer is majoring in early childhood education.

Hoselton is majoring in middle childhood education.


Students earn scholarships from OCU

The following local students have been awarded a scholarship from Ohio Christian University:

  • Janett Burgos Escobar of Circleville is the recipient of the Tony and LuAnn Eichstadt Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Burgos Escobar is studying Chemical Dependency Counseling.
  • Liliana Burgos Escobar of Circleville is the recipient of the Oakley H. & Inez M. Leist Memorial Scholarship and Ohio Christian University Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Burgos Escobar is studying Middle Childhood Education.
  • Benjamin Caplan of Circlevilleis the recipient of the Mike's Landscaping Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Caplan is studying Business Management.
  • Meghan Coleman of Circleville is the recipient of the Charles and Lillian Duvall Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Coleman is studying Disaster Management.
  • Nathan Copeland of Ashville is the recipient of the Ohio Christian University Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Copeland is studying PreLaw in Business.
  • Mekayla Deffenbaugh of Circleville is the recipient of the Rev. James K. Crocker Memorial Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Deffenbaugh is studying Intercultural Ministries.
  • Kelsea Gifford of Circleville is the recipient of the Jim and Diane Sutton Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Gifford is studying Christian Ministries.
  • Alyson Gritter of Commercial Point is the recipient of the Owen and Joyce Johnson Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Gritter is studying Business.
  • Jeremy Hall of Circleville is the recipient of the Clyde Cook Family Scholarship and Raymond Moats Memorial Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Hall is studying Youth Ministries.
  • Miracle Higginbotham of Circleville is the recipient of the Jim and Diane Sutton Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Higginbotham is studying Psychology.
  • Katie Keep of Lancaster is the recipient of the Mark and Lois Taylor Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Keep is studying Psychology.
  • Sarah Keeton of Circleville is the recipient of the Uhrig Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Keeton is studying Psychology.
  • Katherine Lawless of Orient is the recipient of the Radcliff Family Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Lawless is studying Criminal Justice.
  • Rachael Lynch of New Holland is the recipient of the Jim and Diane Sutton Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Lynch is studying Music Education.
  • Anna Shappert of Commercial Point is the recipient of the Jim and Diane Sutton Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Shappert is studying Interdisciplinary Studies.
  • Ruth Van Sandt of Circleville is the recipient of the Jim and Diane Sutton Scholarship from Ohio Christian University. Van Sandt is studying Business.

Leidecker earns bachelor's degree

Brocky Leidecker of Orient earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from University of the Cumberlands.

A total of 745 students completed their studies and earned degrees on May 7, including 200 bachelor's degrees, 487 master's degrees and 14 doctorate degrees. Additionally, there were three associate's degrees and 41 education specialists.


Steck graduates from University of Findlay

Sara Steck of Orient has graduated from the University of Findlay. Steck received a bachelor of arts in criminal justice and equestrian studies.

Steck was invited to walk in the University's commencement ceremonies on April 30. More than 500 graduates earned doctoral, master's, bachelor's or associate degrees in spring 2016.


Three named to Trailblazer Academy dean's list

Coralie Christopher of Circleville, Shane Edmonds of Orient and Maria Shappert of Commercial Point recently were named to the dean's list at Ohio Christian University for the spring 2016 semester.

The three are local high school students taking dual credit courses through OCU's Trailblazer Academy.

To be eligible for the dean's list, a student must achieve a semester GPA of 3.5 or better and be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours.

Heidelberg announces spring semester dean's list

A total of 327 Heidelberg University students have been named to the spring semester dean's list at Heidelberg University, according to Provost Dr. Beth M. Schwartz.

Among the local students on the dean's list are Dorothy Faris of Circleville, a senior education major; Colin Graves of Ashville, a senior sport management and business administration major; and Travis Hedge of Ashville, a junior computer science major.


Ford graduates from Marietta College

Patrick Ford of Circleville was among approximately 250 students who received diplomas at Marietta College's 179th graduation ceremony on May 1 in the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center.

Ford completed requirements for the bachelor of science in environmental science. He is a graduate of W V Fisher Catholic High School.


Miller recognized for academic achievement

Capping off a day-long Celebration of the Liberal Arts at Wittenberg University, the campus community came together to celebrate and recognize Jessica Miller of Orient for the achievement of Kappa Delta Pi at the annual Honors Convocation on April 8 in Weaver Chapel.

The faculty commemorated the occasion in full academic regalia as the university recognized high achievement of students and faculty members in academic and co-curricular activities.


Leatherwood honored at Otterbein

Adrien Leatherwood of Ashville was one of four members of the Otterbein University women's tennis team who recently received All-Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) recognition.

Otterbein was led by junior Rylie Markle (Middletown/Madison), who earned first team honors for the first time in her career. Senior Sammi Kruger (Cincinnati/Sycamore) and freshman Sophie Allen (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman) landed on the second team, while senior Adrien Leatherwood (Ashville/Teays Valley) was named honorable mention.

Leatherwood was awarded with the fourth All-OAC accomplishment of her career after leading Otterbein in singles victories with an overall record of 20-5 in third and fourth singles. She won 11-straight singles matches spanning the final one of the fall through mid-April. After the starting the season in second doubles, Leatherwood moved up to first doubles where she and Markle put together a six-match win streak in the middle of the spring.

Otterbein finished the year with its third trip in the last four years to the OAC Tournament championship, falling to top-seeded John Carroll. The Cardinals were 18-4 overall and 6-2 in league play, making it the fourth-straight season in which they have recorded 12 or more wins.


Graves graduates from Heidelberg University

Colin Graves of Ashville graduated Cum Laude May 15 from Heidelberg University. Graves received a bachelor of science degree in sport management and business administration.

President Robert H. Huntington presented diplomas to 235 seniors and an additional 38 graduate students, who received master's degrees in counseling, education, business administration and music education.


Chipps participates in art and design exhibition

Sarah Chipps of Orient recently participated in the 2016 Juried Student Art and Design Exhibition at the University of Findlay. Chipps showcased her creativity in digital photography.

Any UF student was eligible to enter artwork for consideration. Categories included painting, drawing and mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, design, digital photography, film photography and visual communication.
