SOUTH BLOOMFIELD - A fire involving a back-up generator for the village water system is not expected to disrupt water service for South Bloomfield residents, according to Mayor Matthew Pettibone.

The fire broke out mid-morning on Tuesday and is believed to be related to a weekly generator test, Pettibone said, although the root cause of the blaze has yet to be determined.

The back-up generator and air compressor damaged Tuesday are used when the village water plant loses primary power to avoid disruption of service.

"Since this is a back-up system, we do not expect water disruption," Pettibone said. "We will have a temporary back-up system up and running by this evening and will be working with the insurance agency to rebuild as soon as possible."

South Bloomfield Police, Harrison Fire Department and South Bloomfield Utilities and Street Department personnel all assisted at the scene to secure the area and reduce additional damage to nearby buildings, he said.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

"I would like to thank all first responders and village employees for such a quick response and for doing whatever it takes to avoid a disruption to our water services," Pettibone said.
