Teays Valley receives PPG grants for STEM education

PPG Industries in Circleville awarded $3,000 in grants to the Teays Valley Local School District this school year for STEM enrichment.

South Bloomfield Elementary School first grade teacher Heather Bartholow received a $1,000 grant to purchase LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 sets. These sets make STEM learning come to life. Through the curriculum, students will team up to solve problems using science, technology, engineering, mathematics and coding.

South Bloomfield Elementary and Walnut Elementary School gifted intervention specialist Julie Preece received $1,000 grants for both schools for materials to complete a STEM unit on force and motion. With the materials provided, the students will design, construct and race their own bottle racer vehicle. They will get to see first hand how air pressure, force and potential energy work.

"This STEM challenge will provide fifth grade students in both buildings with the opportunity for experimentation with variables and enable them to make modifications based on observations," Preece said. "It will give students the opportunity to measure time and distance, calculate speed and demonstrate how the use of air pressure provides movement."

"We are grateful for the support that PPG has continued to give us," said Bruce Bryant, principal of South Bloomfield Elementary School. "These grants help our teachers to provide additional resources and learning tools to our students."
